Scientists find fossil of world's biggest bug

LONDON - THIS was a bug that you'd have to look up to and definitely couldn't step on.


British scientists have stumbled across a fossilised claw, part of an ancient sea scorpion, that is of such large proportion it would make the entire creature the biggest bug ever.


How big? Bigger than you, about 2.5 metres long.

The discovery in 390-million-year-old rocks also suggests that spiders, insects, crabs and similar creatures were much larger in the past than previously thought, said Mr Simon Braddy, a paleontologist from the University of Bristol and one of the study's three authors.

'This is an amazing discovery,' Mr Braddy said on Tuesday.


'We have known for some time that the fossil record yields monster millipedes, super-sized scorpions, colossal cockroaches and jumbo dragonflies. But we never realised until now just how big some of these ancient creepy-crawlies were,' he said.

The research found a type of sea scorpion that was almost half a meter longer than previous estimates and the largest one ever to have evolved.

The study, published online on Tuesday in the Royal Society's journal Biology Letters, also means that before this sea scorpion became extinct it was much longer than today's average man is tall.

Professor Jeorg W. Schneider, a paleontologist at Freiberg Mining Academy in southeastern Germany, praised the study, saying it provides new information about how big the ancient scorpions became.

'Last of giant scorpions''

These 2.5-metre ones were the last of the giant scorpions,' said Prof Schneider, who was not involved in the study. 'These scorpions were dominant for millions of years because they didn't have natural enemies. Eventually they were wiped out by large fish with jaws and teeth.'

Mr Braddy's partner paleontologist Mr Markus Poschmann found the claw fossil several years ago in a quarry near Prum, Germany, that probably had once been an ancient estuary or swamp.

'I was loosening pieces of rock with a hammer and chisel when I suddenly realised there was a dark patch of organic matter on a freshly removed slab. After some cleaning I could identify this as a small part of a large claw,' said Mr Poschmann, another author of the study.

'Although I did not know if it was more complete or not, I decided to try and get it out. The pieces had to be cleaned separately, dried and then glued back together. It was then put into a white plaster jacket to stabilise it,' he said.

Eurypterids, or ancient sea scorpions, are believed to be the extinct aquatic ancestors of today's scorpions and possibly all arachnids, a class of joint-legged, invertebrate animals, including spiders, scorpions, mites and ticks.

Lived only in Germany

In an interview, Mr Braddy said the fossil was from a Jaekelopterus Rhenaniae, a kind of scorpion that lived only in Germany for about 10 million years, about 400 million years ago.

He said some geologists believe that gigantic sea scorpions evolved due to higher levels of oxygen in the atmosphere in the past. Others suspect they evolved in an 'arms race' alongside their likely prey, fish that had armor on their outer bodies.

Mr Braddy said the sea scorpions also were cannibals that fought and ate one other, so it helped to be as big as they could be.' -- AP

Scientists estimate that millions of plant and animal species remain unknown, especially those in this region - with a vast number constantly being discovered.

WHILE the leopard cat, or prionailurus bengalensis, can be found all over Asia and throughout most of South-east Asia, it is considered one of the rarest mammals here.

In fact, the miniature feline was so rarely seen that it was thought to be extinct on the mainland, despite being found on islands like Pulau Tekong. But just last month, one was spotted - sadly, as roadkill - in Jalan Bahar, outside the Civil Defence Academy.

The average leopard cat is as large as a domestic cat. It can reach up to 50cm in body length, and its tail grows to as long as 25cm.

The fur of those found here is yellow-brown, with black markings that may be, depending on the sub-species, spots or rosettes.

These cats are nocturnal and usually solitary except during mating. They are not considered dangerous, and eat frogs, lizards, birds and forest rats.

"Auld lang syne " in scottish means "the good old days"or "long time ago". It is supposed to be a poem written partially by Robertr Burns in the 1700s. It was later published in 1796 after Burns' death. By singing this song it means basically " don't forget the good times we had in Maths class" or remember the time in Social Studies when we all fell asleep (not that this happened, I'm just taking this as an example)."

MODERN world, modern marriages, modern mess - quickie divorces among young Singaporeans are on the rise, latest reports indicate.

Yet it often takes an old-fashioned marriage - 72 years to be exact - to add lustre to matrimony's tarnished image.

Mr Tan Sim Lian and Madam Teo Hwee Choo, both 92, were hardly apart during their years of marriage.

And when Mr Tan died last Saturday, his wife, Madam Teo, died later that same day.

Three weeks ago, Mr Tan, who was dying at a hospice, told his children his last wish: To see his wife for one last time.

His wife, her memory battered by illness, could not recognise him. The children had to place her hand in his.

'For nearly 10 minutes, they sat and looked at each other and said nothing.

'Later, I saw that both of them were at peace with themselves,' the couple's third child, Mr Tan Kok Chiang, said.

The elderly couple's coffins were placed side by side at their five-day wake at Whampoa Drive.

Mr Tan, 54, said his father had been battling stomach cancer for the past five months.

Last month, he was admitted to a hospice, where he died around 2am on Nov 10.

Mr Tan and his five siblings - two older brothers and three younger sisters - had earlier decided not to inform either parent if the other died, because they were afraid that the surviving parent could not bear the news.

So they kept the news of their father's death from their mother.

Mr Tan, a taxi driver, recalled: 'But I think my mother suspected something when we started removing his things from their room later that day.

He added: 'She refused to eat her food or drink any water. She just sat in the room and watched the people moving things out.'

Around 8pm, Mr Tan's sister called him and said that their mother's breathing was becoming laboured.

The rest of the family rushed back to see her.

Madam Teo died at about 11.30pm.

Mr Tan said his parents came from farming families in a small town in Guangdong province in China.

After their arranged marriage, his father moved to Hong Kong and then to Singapore before World War II to find a better life.

They were reunited 12 years later.

His father sent for her after the war, when things were more settled.

They lived in a small attap house in a kampung at Jalan Rajah in the Balestier area.

The family then moved to a flat in Toa Payoh in the late '60s.

The couple moved in with their eldest son in Whampoa several years ago.

Mr Tan said that his best memories of his parents were of how much they loved and cared for each other.

He said: 'I never heard them shout at each other, although I am sure that they had their quarrels.

'Each of them would just try to convince the other of their position.'

Mr Tan said his parents always ate at least one meal together daily.

He recalled: 'When my father was working, my mother would wake up early in the morning to cook porridge for him.

'When he started working as a taxi driver, they would eat porridge together after his shift and then have dinner together later.

'My father would also insist that my mother eat more food and he would get very worried if she was not eating enough.

Said Mr Tan: 'Although I always bought enough food for each of them, my father always gave some of his food to my mother.

'After his retirement, my parents always ate together.'

The couple will be cremated today at Mandai Crematorium.

It seems they were determined that death would not keep them apart.

About 10 years ago, they bought adjacent niches so that their ashes could be placed together.

It was like, such a great class party yesterday!!! It was the best class party ever yet. We ordered pizza and it was all gone in like, under 10 seconds and it was just crazy. Then there was basketball and netball and all. Then I was eating ice and Chin Teng was sitting on the floor and I just pranked him. 'Cos it was kinda...Drizzling a little bit n I decided to prank him. I clutched the ice wif my hand and let the water drip around him and he thougth it was starting to rain again. XD. Lols. That's all 4 now...

Missin you guys already

Hey, guys!! I miss all of you already even though the holidays just started 'cos I know that it's goin' to be 6 weeks stuck at home. Why can't the holidays be only one month? For once, I wish we did'nt have such a long holiday. I dunno why but as I grow older, I get much more emotional. Like, take last year, for example. I did not even miss any of my friends 'cos I know we have 2 more years together but now, in P5, I'mm missin' everyone already. Even Chin Teng 'cos I wanna quarrel with him somemore. Last day of school already...

Hi, everyone. This is Heartbroken again. Well, all I want to say is that time flies when you're having fun,huh? Well, it is true, but I don't like it. I am SO going to miss everyone. The holidays are for 6 LOOONG weeks. I don't know if I can survive for that long without going out with any of my friends, or see them, at least. Well, this is it. The end of the year. I don't really like end of years. I know some of you enjoy the one and a half month long holiday. But I'm one person who does'nt. Why can't they make the holidays shorter? I mean, hey, don't think I'm braggy but, I JUST HATE LONG HOLIDAYS especially when your friends are going to other countries. Andrew, for example. Hate the last day of school

Hi all,
This is Heartbroken here. You know, I just wanted to tell you that I REALLY HATE the last day of school at the end of the year. I just can't bear to go throught one and a half months without any of my friends with me through the holidays. I just hate it so much. Well, at least we can chat on the blog and on MSN. And we have a end of year class party to make things slightly better. I don't think you want to play the song "When You're Gone" by Avril Lavigne. That would make things worse as others would miss their friends even more. I think the proper song you might want to listen to is Graduation(Friends Forever). That would make things much more meaningful. As the song goes in Graduation : As we go on, we remember all the times we had together. And as our lives change, come whatever, we will still be, friendsforever !!!
But as for When You're gone, it goes : When you're gone, the pieces of my heart are missing you. When you're gone, the face I came to know is missing too. When you're gone, the words I need to hear will always get me through the day. And make it okay, I miss you...

Its me again. I just can't bear to leave Singapore. Singapore is my homeland. it is the place where most of my friends and relatives. But, leaving this place for a very long time is not that easy.

I am sure Jocelyn and lu jian had felt this feeling. Maybe some of you also had felt this feeling. Its not what you feel before leaving on a overseas trip. Your leaving Singapore and almost all your friends and relative behind for a long period before meeting them again.

Lu jian is leaving for china on the 12 November 2007. Surprisingly, he might be visiting me late December when i have gotten all the important stuff sorted out.

Day by Day, i see my friends slowly fade away.....

The day when i leave is nearing. I can't belive that ONE whole year has past. Rumors had be spreading about when i am leaving, so i am here to comfrim the facts.

I will be leaving on 7th Dec 2007. Its a morning flight to melbourne. Almost all my stuff is on its way to australia by ship. There is NO farewell party because my family is very busy preparing.

Me and 5H.... My Take

It's almost 4am and I'm still awake. I think by now most of you have noticed I'm like a flower withering away.

It's been a meaningful year in Elias Park. Teaching 5H is one of the most meaningful classes I've ever taught. All along I've told you guys about values and it's still the same old quote, "You can always catch up with a genius if you're hardworking". Well, Andrew almost did with Sean Tan and Dennis.

I was never a genius. I'd done badly for Math in P3, hated fractions then. But I worked real hard, REAL hard. Eventually, I was always the best 3 in Math. Love Math till today, perhaps till the day I die. It's about your mentality at times. If you got great character, you mould yourself to be a great person. 5H got plenty of these children.

I think there's always been a HUGE misunderstanding about Mr Wan. I seem to strike fear in almost any pupil I'd seen. But the funny thing is, there's always a group of pupils who don't fear Mr Wan and it's always the class Mr Wan teaches. Most of you fear me, my scolding, my loud voice, or maybe even my shadow. If you think deeply about it, you'll realise there's more than half the class of whom I've never scolded right in front of them. Have you ever wondered why?

I know some of you may not enjoy my teaching. All teachers experience that and I'm used to that. I believe in what a senior teacher once told me when I was a beginning teacher. "Whether you've done a good job, your students will know. Trust me, they know."

She's right. They know. My ex-P6 pupils still email me. I'm touched. It's like a long-lost pen pal who just returned a mail. It didn't just tell me that they appreciated my teaching, it told me that I've done the right thing for them.

I've always scolded you for not remembering what I've said and then repeating the mistakes in the exam. I think it pains me more than it pains you. Just imagine a baker who baked a cake meant for 40. Only 5 out of 40 ate the cake. The rest did not bother to taste it. They just missed the cake. How did the baker feel?

It has almost come to the end of the year. I may not be your teacher next year but I just want you to know that you're great students. Don't let your talents go to a waste. Don't lose that spirit you've developed in 5H.

The last thing I want you to do is: If you've promoted or remained in 6H, please consider the feelings of those around you who have not. It's not a nice feeling at all. Don't feel too proud of yourself having promoted or retained in 6H.

Don't forget you're once friends in the same class and will always be friends.

Don't forget the wonderful times you've had in 5H, except my scoldings, of course.

Don't forget that it's this strength that got all of you the Model Class Award.

Don't ever you were once the students of Mr Allan Wan (without ahem) and they never give up without a fight.

I am writing this blog just to say sorry to Mr Wan for not signing and not bringing the letter for my parents. Please do forgive me! I would ensure that it won't happen again and I would bring it on Tuesday to let you see it. Once again, my apologies for this.

SCHOOL CLOSE ....

I am ultimate sad to hear this two words coming to my mind as I had many remarkable great friends going to other classes. I would also want to have such chances to go an even better class but it seems that my chances are pretty slim after what Mr Wan had indicated in his blog. Well, it seems that even my best friend, Wai Keng, has to go to other class just like that. But, I would not want any friends just going to other classes just like that, too. But, I would also want to know that would everyone still remember the 5 Honesty blog and visit it now and then, next year? Can we also have a great class party so that everyone can just remember this only special day and would not forget it? I would also want to take this great opportunity to say "THANK YOU" to those remarkable classmates who help me in all ways. I would also want to say a big "THANK YOU" to Mr Wan, a funny, fierce and passionate teacher who help me in my studies in such a great way. He has left a great impact on me and I would not forget him. I hope he would still be my teacher next year! I also believe that one day, we would be a great class together, with a great teacher, in unite.

A BIRD INCIDENT....

What an unbelievable day it was last night, part of the worst thing in my life. Guess what has happened ! A bird flew into my house and I was again awestruck by it as it was not the first time, but the second! Let me relate the incident to you. I was actually playing "UNO" with my sister and a bird just flew in. Got the story? And, the worst thing was that the bird's droppings landed on a side of the wall in the study room. It was the most disgusting thing I had ever seen.

We all watched a horror movie today!!

today, we had a talk on dental care from our skl dentist. but then, it was our worst nightmare had began.

the slideshow consisted of pictures of really horrible sets of teeth. most of them with gum disease. seriously, all the food i had consumed during recess wanted to come back up at that moment. even andrew got scared. i suppose hes brushing, flossin and rinsin his mouth like mad after lkin at the pics. gosh. those were really scary. i would much rather sit thru saw4 than c tht slideshow again. especially the pic with the set of teeth covered with dental caculus. and i totally agree with pei zhen, the teeth looked as tho they were floatin in the air. lol. i still shiver jus thinkin bout it. lol.

i guess we all experienced a horror slideshow today! ^^

Dear mr Wan, I did not pass up the 3 quarter of a foolscrap paper.Sorry!So in the end i post a blog!This was what happened on that day.I had done the 3 quarter of a foolscrap paper and i had planned to pass it up the next day.However,when I checked my bag,i found out that i forgot to bring it!I realised that i had left it on the table of my sturdy room.I was scared that mr Wan would scold me!However, MR WAN did not come!Then, i thought that maybe i will do butt-dancing.But i decided to pass it up afterschool.However, when i realised that i lost the 3 quarter of a foolscrap paper and now is 6.30,i decided to do a blog!I had WRITTEN and i Still NEED TO WRITE AGAIN!yea!-(SHOULD BE THE OPPOSITE WAY)Anyway, EXAMS are over!NO!-(SHOULD BE THE OPPOSITE WAY).I finally have freedom.Actually, my parents were not happy with my results.While, of course, i am still allowed to play X-BOX!Anyway, who are not happy with your results?Me too.Even though my maths improved, all my other three subject dropped.Anyway, i really want to stay in this class.I rather go to kindness(if i cannot stay in this class)than go to 6Courage.Eh, maybe the people in this class disliked me because i am confused, i will try not to be confused.Anyway, is this enough, i have written all ready.Would you just let me go?Ok, fine.If i did not write enough, i will just write more.let me tell you a story.Once upon a time ,there is a boy called Quanjun who is typing and wanted Andrew to let him go.The END!

Letter of Apology

That day on 4 november 2007, Mr Wan gave us a slip of paper on our SA2 results. He wanted us to show it to our parents and ask them to sign it, but I forgotten to ask pass it to my parents and ask them to sign it. I did not do this on purpose. Mr Wan punished us by giving us a choice to do the butt dance(writing words with your butt), do not get back examination paper or write a letter of apology which must be half a page of paper without leaving any lines. I decided to write the letter as if I do the butt dance, I will feel very ashamed and I would not want to let the chance of taking the examination paper back to be loss so I did the writing of letter. This is all I have apologise to the whole class and Mr Wan. Hope you all will accept my apology. That's the end I can apologise to you all.

This...That...SONG

My sing is sooo good !![the opposite] I saw people booing @ me!! I swear that i am not going to sing anymore!! I don't want anyone booing @me again!!I know that my singing sucks & i never practice @ home , but i have!! Its just that i suddenly gone black out [can't remember]!!

While maybe not swear.Just for(lets see)...1 day...2 days...3days...4days

Even thought me sad/down, i wanted to thank those who cheer for me. thank u !!!Super thanks to Pei Zhen[ me best friend], Joey[me third best friend],Dennis [1 who help me remember the lyrics>before recess],n others who help/cheer 4 me even if my sing sucks!!THANKS!!

I know Megan & Wei Chong & Daryl & Darius sang a lot better than me................so next time cheer as lot as u can when u see/hear them sing!!Don't cheer 4 me !!Maybe cheer 4 every one in the class other than me OK!!
