Snake venom production varies with prey

YOU really are what you eat.

Using poisonous snakes, scientists at the National University of Singapore (NUS) have shown that the type of venom produced by these reptiles depends directly on their prey.

Professor Manjunatha Kini, of the NUS department of biological sciences, and his team tracked the changes in venom composition in several land and sea snake species - down to the genetic level - using sophisticated protein analysis.

They found land snake venom has a wide array of toxins to match the snake's diverse prey. That of the sea snake, however, targets mainly the nervous system - the best way for the creature to snare its diet of fish.

While the genetic blueprint for the reptiles has remained relatively constant over generations, genes which carry instructions for venom production can evolve at a surprising pace - possibly up to 10 times quicker depending on the species.

Results of their findings were published in this month's edition of online scientific journal BMC (Bio-Med Central) Evolutionary Biology.

Prof Kini and his team observed that land snakes, which feed on anything from rodents to birds to other reptiles, have up to 20 different types of toxin, including those that cause paralysis, internal bleeding or heart attacks.

However, sea snakes like Lapemis curtus (above) prefer fast-acting neurotoxins - which quickly destroy the fish nervous system - ensuring their catch does not swim away.

The results of the test help give scientists a better understanding of how snake venoms work and evolve - hopefully leading to discovery of potent therapeutic drugs in the future, said Prof Kini.

Joslyn, the Most Misunderstood Girl (by Mr Wan)

I think by now, almost everyone in class dislikes Joslyn and wonders why I haven't removed her as a monitress.

Well, the reason is simple. She hasn't done anything wrong that fits that treatment. The next question would be: Why is she so unliked by so many?

That is not so simple to answer. First of all, do consider her background. With education in Britain and partially Dubai, Joslyn is used to speaking up her mind and given freedom to express her ideas and creativity. In Singapore, however, being quiet and obedient is a form of respect shown to both teachers and classmates. This is something not many children coming from the west could easily conform to.

The next issue would be her nationality. Many people do not understand why as a Singapore Chinese, Joslyn could not speak Chinese and to make things worse, people made fun of the fact that she, as a Chinese, could not converse in Chinese. I find this form of treatment senseless. I think in modern day Singapore, most Cantonese cannot speak Cantonese. Nor can some Hakka or Hokkien speak their own Mother Tongue.

I feel that the value of "love" has been eroded when it comes to Joslyn. I'm not asking everyone to "love" her. But more of understanding where she's from and be more tolerant of her actions. What you see from her is what you would've seen on TV in a normal school in America or Britain. To her, she's unable to talk to you like she could to her friends in Britian. To you, she's like a weirdo who seems to complain to much about everything.

Some would comment that Joslyn shouts in class, Joslyn treats people unfairly, Joslyn this, Joslyn that. Well, tell me who has not done something wrong in 5H? Even I do shout in class, I do treat others unfairly.

We always look at the ugly side of a person but not the good one. Compared to Wei Bin, many would say that Wei Bin is a much better role model as a monitor. So, tell me. How many times has Wei Bin been scolded for not doing work, for not doing corrections, for not owning up to his mistakes? How many times has Wei Bin been sent to Tatarus? Have I sacked him? Has Joslyn been through all those scoldings that Wei Bin has gone through?

Sometimes, we're quick to judge others and sometimes, we don't give chance to others. Put yourself in Joslyn's shoes today. What options do you have if you're treated by your friends in this manner. If I were to be Joslyn for one day, I'd think the whole class dislikes me and I'd try my best to keep quiet, comment less, which means I'll try not to be myself just because my friends don't like it. Yet, my friends still will not like me after all my efforts. It's miserable but I don't have much of a choice. The best thing I could do is to keep quiet and keep everything to myself.

Is this how you want Joslyn to feel? Then perhaps, you'll need to reflect upon yourself. What have you done that have put you in such a great position to judge others like that?

Life In Indonesia (Christie)

Last week, Mr. Wan told us about respecting others. This reminds me of my life at Indonesia. At the Indonesia school, I was a year younger than any of my friends at Indonesia. At Indonesia, kindergarten is called ‘TK’. At ‘TK’, there is some kind of playground, while other children play, I just stand aside. I am really not a talkative person. Primary school at Indonesia the call it ‘Sekolah Dasar (SD)’. There I also don’t have many friends. Instead quite a number of pupils bully me. When we were doing our exercise I always cover them. But even tough I cover them up they take my hands away from my book. When it resses time while the others was running and playing. I just stand at the gate and watch them play. When other people bully I have always thought that I should give them another chance. Do you think I should? No! It has been a big mistake to give them chances. My life has become worst and I always gave them chances.

i am very very hairy .. im lik a furry animal ok i am gonna tell u how it happened..it was in july . friday last weekday of the school holidays(june holidays )...

i ran then runoffed(it also a stunt)then bacflipped,all there was to was a loud crack ..

i turnned to look at my hand and i though it was not my had
hand cause it wasnot humand (well sort of ).... it was freaky...
well i did not feel any pain cause of my shock...

my teacher hu witnessed this told mi to stay put while she took the ice pack ...she also called my mom hu called a taxi wich brought mi to ze hospital ...

she did not call a ambulance as they would fetch mi to ze nearest hospital wich was toa payo or a.m.k hospital i need to go to kkh as my godmother is working there...spcial privillage for mi... at the clinic,,, the orthopedic surgon x-rayed my hand ...MY BONE TOTALLLY BROKE INTO TWO...then he injected the numbing medicen.. then he ....BENT ITTT BACK... ouch...exteammly pain

Today, I sang "I Don't L0ve U" n "We1c0me T0 The B1ack Parade". I sang "Welcome To The Black Parade" with Daryl as he always wanted to sing that song so I told Mrs. Lee that I was gonna sing the 2nd song with Daryl. I forced him to come up on stage. It was so fun singing right in front of my classmates. I was quite sad when I finished the 2nd song and I did not want to leave the stage. It was so fun. Would u like me to sing in the future? Tell me as soon as possible in school.

Sorry... I forget bring my journal on tuesday.. And I am sorry also because i acidentally press worng then i send 2 blog that has nothing on it and i don't know how to delete it.. So sorry. I have found the information about Friday but i guess i have to send to Mr Wan on Friday as well... I am very tired these few days as i have to go Joey house on almost every Wed and See Ying house on almost every Fri for the LightHouse. On monday and thursday i have tuition... and every wed and fri i have to do the lighthouse project. On Tuesday, i have school librarian and saturday i have Piano lesson i only left with Sunday to relax.. But maybe not as I will spend the time with my family. Please Read the Title Carefully

That's what the blog's about.

If you're going to add unconstructive remarks like "lame" or comment on others' spelling mistakes, that's not positive or constructive at all.

Think about it this way. What if I were to correct every single grammatical and spelling errors in your journal? How would you feel? I don't think you'll take my "markings" positively. Afterall, the journal is something so precious and personal to you.

The blog is precious and personal to the whole of 5H as well. Please stop the complaints and "lame" comments. If you feel so strongly against it, do us a favour. Don't visit the blog again. I don't think you can feel "5 Honesty's hits and misses, pain and joy" appropriately.

Again, I applaud for Andrew's efforts to make things work. I don't have to know whether his team won anything in any tower-building competition. All I care for is he has contributed his share of joy and misses. At no point did he address someone as "lame".

I could edit the spelling mistake that I made earlier. But the main purpose is to hope for more people to discover the mistake and visit the blog. Let the flaw stay there in the blog. There is no one who is perfect in this world.

I can do nasty things to "force" people to contribute to this blog. Will it work? Maybe, maybe not. I once heard a teacher tell me something about teaching. If there is only 1 person listening to your teaching, you're still teaching. You don't have to let the 39 others make you feel disheartened.

This blog will continue as long as there is 1 person from 5H contributing. I don't need the 39 others to make it work.

Wai Keng has mentioned "Tagboard" to me earlier on. Does anyone know what it's about? Can it be placed in this blog to network everyone? Project:Memories of 5 Honesty

I have been working on a short movie and i need some help completing it.

The them is well....of course memories of our class.

My Left and Right Hands

First of all, I'm just so glad Joslyn has posted something in the 5H blog.

100 to your team! Since you're in the Immortal realm, that makes it 200!

Back to the subject, *Ahem*.

All teachers have right and left hand men, like mafia (Italian mobsters/gangsters) and Yakuzi (Japanese mafia). When we talk about "right hand", we're talking about the ones who are almost dispensable to the organisation.

For example, the mafia cannot do without their right-hand men: the treasurer or the top assassin (#1 killer). Similarly, we teachers have right-hand men.

Left-hand men refer to those who are very helpful but they're not those whom the organisation relies heavily on. Yet, teachers love to ask them to help up in tasks. They're the second most important group of people to the teachers.

As you can see, "Right-Hand Men" are favourites among the teacher. They have higher chances of getting "Model Pupil Award" than others. Of course, the Mother Tongue teacher may choose to challenge the Award. Hence, these pupils can easily get Model Pupil Award if they have behaved very well during English, Maths, Science and Mother Tongue lessons. Basically, these pupils do not complain much when given work. Unfortunately, Model Pupils Award cannot be given to the same person twice in a year. Pei Zhen and Poh Yi are definitely out of contention for Semester 2.

At the same time, I'm hearing good news from Mother Tongue teachers. Mr Long has expressed that pupils in 5H have improved in their learning attitude and he mentioned Lu Jian. Same goes for Mdm Tan Meng Kee who mentioned about Ina and some others. I'm extremely pleased to hear about that as those pupils have worked so hard in Term 3. Yet, all I can say is "Congratulations!" A one-word that contains so much joy and tears, a one-word that I hope so much can give them more strength, a one-word that no money in the world can purchase.

I don't think I need to describe how I choose my left and right hands. It's rather obvious how much they have contributed to the class and not only to themselves.

This is the first time in my teaching that I've got so many left and right hands. It goes to show the quality of pupils in 5H.

It's 1.50am now. I've got to invigilate a P6 Listening Comprehension class in other school tomorrow and yet, I can't get my sleep. This has caused my body to "hibernate" at 3pm almost everyday.

What I appreciate most are those pupils during remedial today. They seemed to know I'm tired and that I would take quite a while to mark their work. Yet, they chose to wait till I "recovered" to mark their work. There wasn't any "laughs at the teacher" nor "wake him up!". What I sensed were patience and respect. I was touched. I truly am (now).

Sometimes, there are things words alone can never describe. This is one of those occasions. A simply indescribable moment.

ok, u noe wad??? moi is jus gonna babble. i like babblin. in fact, i Am the queen of babblin (and talkin fast), president of the complain union (viva complain union!!), laputan(yep, whose the pioneer of laputa-moi. u dunno? go ask Lujian....) and vice president of the rude club(way to go u all rude ppl!!!!). see, im babblin now.

ok, so exams r gonna start like wad? next wk? so i wish EVERYONE the best of luck in all tht u do. hey, for eng and maths, Dont study- just practise loads ok? and for science, take down notes when u study ur science. tht way, u will memorize it n all. n if ur like me, RELAX on the day before ur exams......wait, hold on, forget wad i just said-jus delete it off ur memory. i forgot u guys had mt and other exams on consecutive days, my bad!!!!! ok but wadeva, jus study hard yall!!!

hmmm.....now waitin for D-Gray-Man to start. omg, today is such is gd episode. thnk goodness for Psle. but i shouldnt rejoice at all. nxt yr, my juniors will be at hme while i- will be takin PSLEs. my sis is soooo lucky, in her life , she only has to take O and A levels, oh and uni exams which r the major exams, while i have to take Psle, os, As and uni exams, oh and french as well. sometimes, u guys r jus plain lucky sometimes. who goes to skl on saturday (besides bryan, but wadeva)???

see? im babbliin, im so gd at tht. hey, maybe thts my hidden talent!!!!! lol. i jus get overboard and go to my world of talkin(lots) sometimes. especially when writin ma journal or blog. ^^........
